Our team building activities are based on the concept of active learning, or rather ‘learning by doing’. This type of learning puts the individual at the centre and gives them the opportunity to take an active part in the training process. Learning through discovery makes the individual more active and aware in the realisation of the project. An example of this approach is the game based on the scenario of the Turkish invasion, which adapts historical contexts for learning.
Let us start with the Socratic concept that even the most knowledgeable person “knows that he does not know” and that even the most uneducated person has his own base of knowledge.
The method of carrying out our team building activities is based on the theories of the greatest theorist of the active method, J. Dewey, and is centred on three bases:
Suggestion of a problem to stimulate reflection.
Provide the subject with some basic tools for problem solving.
Encourage the person in question to present his or her ideas to the group and let him or her compare them with those of the other participants.
This is not a traditional team building event because the participant will have to create a short story about Venice. It will have to be a special story, different from the others, a story that will highlight their characteristics, even in the context of the Turkish invasion.
Throughout the game, because it is a game, everyone will have to demonstrate and refine certain skills and develop a sense of solidarity with their fellow adventurers.
Teams will be formed and each team will have its own leader. The leader will not have an easy task as they will have to lead their team to victory during the challenges similar to the Turkish invasion.
The main purpose of this challenge will be to have people push themselves to their limits in the face of the invading Turks.
Because limits are the creation of the mind, and we only see what our mind wants us to see. There are also psychological boundaries to overcome as a result of the Turkish invasion.
the turkish invasion: team building with the active method
An imaginary historical context will be used to create the story: the Serenissima Republic is facing a serious challenge. During the Turkish invasion, participants will learn critical teamwork skills.
Which one?
The Turkish fleet has taken up position at the mouth of Malamocco. The occupation of the city seems imminent as participants strategize during this Turkish invasion roleplay.
Everyone will have to participate in the project, even those who think they don’t have the skills to make it happen. Those who think they can’t will have to change their perspective and adapt to the new situation.
Why?
As the Buddha said:
“Only those who refuse to change do not change”.
What do we want to stimulate?
Be creative and be spontaneous!
In this particular context, instead of taking part in a team-building activity, participants will play roles as if they were taking part in a comedy. For example, they can imagine the role of the the Turkish invasion.
It is possible to have a perspective of change even in short moments of play like this.
Sometimes it is necessary to adopt the simplicity and spontaneity of the child at play, to abandon the rigidity of the character we play every day.
Timing:
Lecture;
Group brainstorming to define the defence plan and problem resolution plan during the Turkish invasion;
Discussion in which each participant will have their own opinion on the project under development;
At the end, the winning team will be declared. This will be done after careful analysis by the activity observers;
Observers/trainers and paper materials will be provided.
This team building event can be held in a special indoor room or at the Company’s headquarters.
